Divine tales and sacred legends

Lord of Cosmic Waters

Varuna is the guardian of cosmic order (Rita) and the celestial ocean. He rides a Makara (sea creature) and controls all waters - rivers, oceans, and rains. His lasso can bind those who transgress cosmic law.

Capturing Hanuman

When young Hanuman leaped toward the sun thinking it was a fruit, Varuna used his celestial weapon to capture him. However, recognizing Hanuman's divine nature, Varuna blessed him that water would never harm him.

Helping Lord Rama

When Rama needed to cross the ocean to reach Lanka, he first prayed to Varuna. Though Varuna did not appear, Rama's arrow forced the ocean to part, and Varuna then emerged, apologizing and promising to support the bridge built by Rama's army.
