Story
Indra is the king of the gods (Devas) and ruler of Svarga (heaven). As the deity of thunder, lightning, storms, rain, and war, Indra wields the powerful thunderbolt weapon called Vajra. Known for his strength and valor, he rides Airavata, the white elephant, and is often depicted with multiple eyes. Despite his power and position, Indra sometimes displays pride, leading to important lessons about humility in Hindu mythology.

Sacred Stories
Slaying of Vritra
Indra's greatest victory was defeating the dragon Vritra who had blocked all the waters of the world. Using the Vajra made from sage Dadhichi's bones, Indra freed the waters, bringing life-giving rain to the earth and establishing his role as the bringer of prosperity.
The Curse of Gautama
When Indra's actions led to a curse that covered him with a thousand marks, he learned humility. Through penance and devotion, these marks were transformed into eyes, teaching that divine sight comes through acknowledging one's mistakes.
Contest with Krishna
When Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan to protect the people from Indra's torrential rains, Indra realized that divinity manifests in many forms. This story teaches about recognizing the divine presence in unexpected places and the importance of protecting devotees.
